Background

The program is based on Susan Wheelan's latest research on groups and group development as it relates to leadership. Today, UGL is one of the most popular leadership training programs in the country.

This is UGL

UGL is a residential training program for those who want to grow as leaders and team members. The program is designed for people at all levels and in various industries who want to develop their personal leadership skills and gain a deeper understanding of group processes. UGL is based on experiential learning. Both strengths and differences are harnessed to facilitate effective learning.

The Story Behind UGL

In the late 1970s in the United States, the U.S. Department of Defense created a comprehensive 16-week program for internal consultants. These consultants were intended to serve as change agents upon completion of their training. Their primary mission was to restructure and modernize leadership training within the U.S. Department of Defense. The core course used in their efforts—which later became mandatory for all individuals in leadership positions within the U.S. Department of Defense—was known as the LMDC, which stood for Leadership and Management Development Course.

At the same time, Swedish psychologist Anders Risling was working for the Swedish Armed Forces. Risling learned about the American consulting program and was inspired to adapt and introduce similar methods in Sweden. In 1978, he conducted the very first training program in Sweden, which was named UGL—Development of Groups and Leaders.

This initiative introduced a groundbreaking methodology to the Swedish leadership development landscape and established UGL as a significant training model in group and leadership development. By adapting and refining the American principles to the Swedish context, Risling created a program structure that focused on developing effective leadership and group dynamics.
